The WHY Behind Foresight Financial Planning

Hi, I’m Tyler.

Founder of Foresight Financial Planning. Planning engagements are transactional to some extent, but to me they are relationships built between the planner and the client. If I’m going to learn so much about you and your financial life, it’s only fair that you’re able to learn a little bit about me and why I chose to become a financial planner that specifically serves optometrists.

A passion for people

Similar to the passion that likely drove you to optometry, I have a passion to help people. I love having conversations that go beyond the surface level and get down to the things that really matter. When my wife was in optometry school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, we were surrounded by friends in the program and profession. Of course many times our conversations drifted to patient care or exams, but often we discussed the things that aren’t necessarily taught in optometry school. How do I negotiate a contract? What is the wisest timeline to pay off my student loans? What will our lives and budgets look like when we transition to the “real world?” Where will we move to after school, and what kind of house can our budget afford? Having a strong background in data analytics, I decided to pursue a career in the financial planning industry to help this group of doctors that I care for so much answer some of these questions.

A desire to serve

Serving others is something that we are all called to do in one way or another. It makes the world a better place and makes us feel useful at the same time. I believe that there is a need for financial planners. Money can be an emotional topic, and I am here to help people overcome the obstacles they may face while seeking to improve their financial wellbeing. People struggle with making important financial decisions on their own. They can feel burdened and alone. As your financial planner,  I will be there to help guide you through your financial decisions, big and small. As someone who will not be paid based on commission, I can look at your finances with an unbiased perspective. I am excited to get to know you and your family and see how we can help you reach your financial goals!

A knack for personal finance

I’ve always had an interest in money and personal finance. From a young age, my parents fostered that interest by encouraging me to be intentional with the chore money I earned. I was encouraged to give a portion away, save some for the future, and spend the rest however I pleased. The discipline that this developed was important in teaching me that money was a tool to help others, plan for the future, and enjoy the freedoms that managing money well can give. Talking about money at a young age allowed me to view finances as commonplace instead of as a subject that is “taboo.”

As I’ve aged, I’ve continued to broaden my financial education. After working for ten years in public and private data analytics, I decided to go back to school to earn a Certificate in Financial Planning from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. This exposed me to new topics and case studies applicable to not only my own finances but also to the financial situation of potential clients. In July 2023 I passed the  CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Exam. I have spent many months researching and preparing the best program for my clients, and I am constantly searching for ways to expand my knowledge in the personal finance field.

Why specialize in optometry?

While Foresight Financial Planning is happy to service the needs of clients from every background, we specialize in working with optometrists. While optometrists are each unique in their own way, they often face similar challenges in their careers and personal lives. Foresight Financial Planning is well equipped to help with challenges relating to student loan repayment strategies, employee benefits and employment contracts while understanding the time constraints put in place by balancing patient care and time with family.

My wife, Sarah Kate, is my main connection to the optometry profession. I’ve been beside her through optometry school and as she started her career as an OD in a private practice. I understand the challenges that come along with this rewarding career. Through my wife’s journey as an optometrist, I realized that the optometric profession is largely underserved in the financial planning community. Optometrists, and also medical professionals in general, train and prepare for high-level patient care, but are not necessarily prepared to care for their financial life outside of work. That is where Foresight Financial Planning comes in. We can help ease your financial stresses so you can do what you enjoy the most, taking care of your patients, serving your community and spending time with your family and friends.

Your interests above my own.

That is my pledge to you. I believe that financial planning fees should be as fair and transparent as possible. Foresight Financial Planning has a flat fee-only mode that only incentivizes us to serve your best interest. You pay us and we help you, it’s as simple as that.
